Have you used a classic literature book lately?
Reading may be the backbone of homeschooling, but that doesn’t mean you are including classic books in the mix. If you haven’t tried it yet, consider these points.
1. Reading classic books is a great strategy for Multi-age/multi-grade families. Read aloud and let each child get it on his own level. Assign classics or parts of classics as reading for your children.
2. Adaptable learning is possible from classic books. Younger children can give oral narrations. Older children can write about the books (in notebooking, lapbooking, copywork or otherwise.) High school children can write full length reports.
3. Learn about history from classic literature books in a way that reveals thoughts, emotions, and actions of individuals rather than a dry record of what was done and when it occurred.
4. Reading reinforces language skills effortlessly. Speaking, spelling, writing are all absorbed from a life filled with rich readings.
You don't have to be following a classic book curriculum. Sneak in a few now and then and you can still reap the benefits.
